Preserving History with Technology: Blue Raster Partners with Historic Oakland Foundation

At Blue Raster, we’re dedicated to leveraging cutting-edge technology to breathe new life into historical records. Our recent collaboration with the Historic Oakland Foundation on the Oakland Cemetery Burial Records Database Interactive Map is a perfect example of how Esri ArcGIS technology can transform the way we preserve and access historical data. This project has made over 150 years of burial records not only accessible but also interactively engaging for anyone with an internet connection.

A Complex Challenge

Oakland Cemetery, a historic landmark in Atlanta, holds burial records that span nearly two centuries. These records, originally kept in various physical formats, were critical for the cemetery’s operations and educational initiatives. However, accessing this information was a time-consuming and delicate process due to the fragile nature of many documents.

When the Historic Oakland Foundation sought our help in digitizing and centralizing these records, we recognized the significance and complexity of the task. Our mission was to create a comprehensive digital map that was easy to use and accessible to all.

Building the Geodatabase with ArcGIS Enterprise

Our work began by consolidating all the available burial records into a robust geodatabase. To host this critical data, we utilized Esri’s ArcGIS Enterprise, ensuring that the data was securely managed and easily retrievable. This enterprise-level solution provided the backbone for the geodatabase, allowing for seamless integration and long-term scalability.

One of the most significant challenges was ensuring data accuracy. To achieve this, we employed field GIS tools and workflows, making the meticulous process of cross-referencing the digitized records with physical burial sites possible by a group of staff and volunteers. This ground-truthing process was essential in verifying the information and ensuring that the digital records reflected the reality on the ground.

Developing the Interactive Viewer with ArcGIS Experience Builder

After we established the geodatabase, we turned our focus to designing and developing the interactive map interface using Esri’s ArcGIS Experience Builder. This powerful tool enabled us to craft a user-friendly and visually engaging application that allows users to search for burial records by name, locate gravesites on a map, and access detailed information about notable figures buried at Oakland.

In addition to the burial records, the application includes features designed to enhance the visitor experience. Users can explore points of interest, visitor amenities, and even famous burial sites, all through an intuitive and interactive interface. The flexibility of ArcGIS Experience Builder allowed us to create a customized solution that met the unique needs of the Historic Oakland Foundation.

Legacy for Future Generations

This project was a collaborative effort involving our team at Blue Raster, the Historic Oakland Foundation, and a dedicated group of volunteers. The Oakland Cemetery Interactive Viewer represents more than just a technological achievement; it is a bridge between the past and the present. By digitizing and centralizing these records, we’ve helped ensure that Oakland Cemetery’s rich history is preserved and accessible for future generations. We’re honored to have contributed to this project and are excited to see how the community uses this tool to connect with their heritage.

At Blue Raster, we believe in the power of GIS technology to enhance our understanding of history and the world around us. The Oakland Cemetery project is a shining example of how Esri ArcGIS technologies like ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Experience Builder create meaningful connections between people and the past.

Accountability Framework Initiative and Compliance with GFW Pro

The Global Forest Watch (GFW) Pro application allows users to track and receive alerts of deforestation within their supply chains in real time, offering an accessible and comprehensive way for organizations to view their own progress in this key area of natural resource conservation. Blue Raster is proud to announce two updates to GFW Pro that allow for more efficient analysis of supply chains in light of new international regulations: new analyses specific to Argentina, and implementation of an E.U. deforestation regulation module tracking deforestation of natural lands since 2020.

Accountability Framework Initiative and the EUDR

The Accountability Framework, introduced in 2019 by an international collaboration of private producers and NGOs that form the Accountability Framework Initiative (AFi), provides companies a roadmap to more sustainable production methods by outlining best practices and measures of impact. By applying the Accountability Framework, producers can better ensure that their supply chains adhere to international standards of sustainability and report to stakeholders and consumers the steps they are taking to secure a better future for people and the planet. A particular standard of sustainability for producers will soon be implemented in the EU–the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which obligates organizations that trade within the EU to ensure that their products are:

  • Deforestation-free, meaning they come from a plot of land that was not deforested after 31 December 2020
  • Produced in line with the relevant legislation in the country of production
  • Covered by a due diligence statement.

GFW Pro now allows organizations to explore their production within the framework of EUDR and uses a new layer showing natural lands in 2020 as a baseline for deforestation analyses, confirming that products regulated by the EU are free from deforestation and degradation.

Argentina OTBN Data

Additionally, GFW Pro now includes province-by-province data on Argentina’s Territorial Planning of Native Forests (OTBN). The 2007 regulation categorizes Argentina’s forests into three levels of conservation value and corresponding regulation, ranging from Category I (forest lands of high conservation value that cannot be transformed) to Category III (forest lands of low conservation value that can be transformed within existing regulation). The new data lets organizations monitor the overlap of the OTBN category of lands utilized in production and deforestation of those lands, enabling producers to more efficiently track whether or not tree cover loss remains within limits set by the OTBN regulation.
